Bone Mosten - Sexiest Male Avatar 2008

Hip, hip, hooray! Bone Mosten overwhelmingly won the Sexiest Male SL Avatar of 2008 as voted by the community on the New World Notes Blog and organized by Iris Ophelia.

I'm very pleased for two reasons - the first and least because Boner is a friend of mine, the second and most important is because Bone is one of the funniest and nicest and most talented folks you'll ever meet in SL. The fact that he came into SL and created a non-stereotypical avatar, and infused much of his own taste and personality into creating his persona, and has the sense of humor and intact ego that he can play games with his appearance and not feel threatened in the least by it, is much of what makes him, in my mind anyway, an awesome addition to the world.

WTG Bone!

NWN Hottest Avatars 2008 - Vote Now

Iris Ophelia brings us New World Notes Hottest Avatar 2008. Pop in and vote for your fave. This has been going on for several weeks (months?) now, and the originally nominated list of thirty is down to the last ten! The pressure is on now!

I always love Iris' writing, on NWN or on her own blog Ophelia Drowns. She's chosen an eclectic group of avatars to vote for. Not a single blinging SL uberbouncer in the whole group.
Oh, and go Bone!

New Collection at Paper Couture

The deliciously talented Lu sisters have released a new fall collection. Last season's collection was based on spring flowers. Their fall line is based on feathers. Lots and lots of feathers.

The Lus are well known for their exquisite primwork, their hand-drawn designs, and their sense of whimsy. This latest offering is no exception. Rich colors permeate the offerings. Deep vibrant reds and purples. Electric yellows. The Parakeet above (300L$) is eyecatching with its beads and froufrou prim feathered epaulets.

The Night Heron (350L$) is a lovely mauve confection, layered with brown and white prim feather trim, and multiple textured flexi skirts in contrasting colors. The hand-drawn drape across the bodice is very nicely done. Very flattering and luscious. The feathery textures on the prim trim are layered beautifully.

The feathered prims have a naturalistic sheen to them and a slight transparency that suggests a realistic lightness and softness.

The Lush ballgown is eyecatching with its combination of purple and crimson (450L$). The Cardinal (600L$) is covered all over in a feathery texture - the deep reds are eye-popping.

The famous Alt sisters - I mean Lu sisters - tend to design toward the elegant, and these ball gowns are just over the top. The Gilded Peach (350L$) is a classic with sequins and a side skirt. The Magpie (600L$) is a beautifully understated draped black and white gown with multiple flexi skirts and a long train. The waist is banded with sculpted draped fabric and the bodice is intertwined black and white textured fabric. Luscious! The texture on the Sequin Finch gown (300L$) is so deep and rich as to be mesmerizing. Lovely blues and golds adorn the high waisted skirt, and poofy sleeves and a sparkly brooch keep it in place.

Simpler offerings are the Turtle Dove (400L$) a subtle skirt and blouse with matching feathered cloche evokes the working girl of the 1040's. The Pica (280L$) is white, with cutouts and a black underlay and a beautiful gauzy sculpted wrap is perfectly draped.

For all the work that goes into the Paper Couture collections, their prices are very reasonable, expecially compared with some of the lesser quality stuff that's out there. I make it a point to visit regularly, and I usually get several items. They've branched off into purses and jewelry and shoes and eyeglasses as well, so you can accessorize your outfits as needed. This visit, they got me for three outfits. They remove all their old items with each new collection, so get them while you can. Some of my most highly complimented outfits come from Paper Couture - even the ones that are rapidly approaching "vintage" status.
Keep up the good work, Paper Couture, your efforts are appreciated, and your sense of humor is priceless.
The House of Lu/ Paper Couture is located in the main square in Tableau.

Calling all animators

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it must be a default Second Life avatar, right? Linden Labs is seeking a contract animator to replace the "broomstick up the butt" default avatar walk that causes everyone on the grid to get an animation overrider that then cause all that lag that we love so much! You know, the ones that make the official greeting of SL become "AO off".

So, if you are such an animator, or you just play one in SL, drop a notecard with your name, preferred method of contact, and any links to your work on Bucket Linden's profile in SL. That's Bucket, rhymes with Bucket, Linden.

And good luck!

Torley's Video Tutorials

I've been meaning to blog on Torley's tutorials for a long time, and he just released a bunch of new ones on land. Land ownership, prim counts, parcels, simulators, rental, regions, buying, selling, abandoning, safe sale, you name it, he's filmed it!

Torley's videos are included in the SL Official Blog, and also are available on YouTube. I'd recommend subscribing to either or both! Watch, and learn.

Girl Friday by Icing

Girl Friday is a recent release by Miko Omegamu of Icing. It's a cute little creamy cami and grey skirt, snug and a bit slinky. The camisole is adorned with a generous pouf of flexi prim ruffles, for a nice 3D effect. The skirt is system, with very nice belt detailing, tailoring and seams, especially along the backside. The demure little number can be dressed up or down. I am a complete sucker for a naughty librarian outfit! ;)

Icing is one of those really reliable shops where you know whatever you buy is going to look even better on you than it does in the advertisement. The ruffled prim attaches to the chest, so necklace options can be a bit tricky, and it may need some adjustment depending on your chest topography.

Girl Friday is 250L$ at the main store in Mischief Cove. New freebies as well! SLURL here:

I love <3 Cupcakes!!

I don't know why it took me so long to find longtime SL member Mimi Coral's delicious shop <3 Cupcakes!! She's been in SL forever - maybe I'm just slow! Thanks to Elisha for telling me about her!

Mimi makes all kinds of dresses, and just about only dresses. Retro, nightlife, cocktail, day, casual, swingy, funky, play - you name it and she has a dress for you! I think my first visit there I bought half of her inventory!! Her textures are rich and luscious and multi-layered and very creatively applied. Some of her edges are a little frayed, but the textures make them so worth while if you don't mind that! I like to think of them as "vintage" or gently worn. ;)

Clockwise from top left: Sequins and Glitter Dress, White and Black Dress, Black and Silver Lace Dress, and Black Corset Dress.

Last time I was there, she also had this little freebie available which is just toooo cute! Gold sequins with a tiny prim flap skirt - sweet and sassy and very very short!

Prices are extreeeeemly reasonable! Less than $200L per outfit.

Come Sail Away

Here's a wonderful article on the joys of open water sailing by my good friend Elisha Paklena Baby Steps (or, Mowry to Benicia) in the SL Sailing Blog .
There are all kinds of sailors in SL - open water, solitary, team, course racers, open water racers, meditators, teachers, organizers, explorers, experimenters, scripters, testers, cruisers, designers, and drunks. ;) Some are many of the above. The SL sailing blog is a great resource for all - check it out! Newcomers to racing are always welcomed with open arms!

We Know Drama

Generally, if I see a sign like this posted in an area, my brain translates it immediaely into "We Know Drama". It's a red flag for folks who have trouble communicating effectively and have poor conflict resolution skills. They're usually generally nice folks, and frequently rather charming and even engaging, especially at first, but things tend to disintegrate after a while, until they predictably explode.

Everyone has friends like this. They blunder around, wondering why there is so much drama everywhere. Limp wrist to agonized forehead, they bemoan the problems that they are having with EVERYONE. Apparently EVERYONE is a drama queen, and they will go on and on to some degree about how awful it is, never suspecting that the one thing that EVERYONE has in common is interaction with themselves.

The logical converse of "I am having a problem with EVERYONE" is "EVERYONE is having a problem with me." But, lacking insight, they never quite make that leap and go on to assume that "new friends" must be the answer, seeking new, unsuspecting victims, errrr friends.

So, if you see some person wearing a "No Drama" button or tshirt, or has this sign hanging in their club or home, don't say I didn't warn you. ;)
